Autumn Leaves

Late autumn in the east of Scotland brings a brutal, beautiful clarity to the air. By November, the canopy at the Dundee Botanic Garden has thinned out, stripping away the heavy, opaque greens of summer to reveal the underlying architecture of the trees.

This frame was entirely about capturing a moment of stillness through light and contrast. The low-positioned November sun acts as a natural rear softbox, transforming the deep ambers, burnt oranges, and olive greens of these oak leaves into vibrant, translucent stained glass. Suspended against a biting, clear cerulean sky, the graphic lines of the dark branches slice through the composition, imposing a sharp geometric structure on an otherwise organic chaos. It is a study in the fleeting convergence of warmth, cold, light, and geometry before winter completely takes hold.
